V-16 Emergency Lights: Spain’s New Road Safety Law Coming in 2026

Starting 1 January 2026, all vehicles in Spain will be required to carry a V-16 emergency light, replacing the traditional warning triangles. This change aims to enhance road safety by reducing the risk to drivers during breakdowns or accidents.

What is a V-16 Emergency Light?

A V-16 emergency light is a compact, battery-powered device that emits a flashing yellow light visible up to 1 kilometer away. Designed to be placed on the vehicle’s roof, it alerts other drivers to a stationary vehicle without the need for the driver to exit the car. From 2026, these devices must be connected to the DGT 3.0 platform, transmitting the vehicle’s location to inform other road users and traffic authorities in real-time.

Why Are V-16 Lights Being Mandated?

The move to V-16 lights is driven by safety concerns. Between 2019 and 2022, over 40 fatalities occurred on Spanish roads involving drivers exiting their vehicles to place warning triangles. By allowing drivers to remain inside their vehicles, V-16 lights significantly reduce such risks.

Key Dates to Remember

  • Until 31 December 2025: Both warning triangles and V-16 lights are permitted.

  • From 1 January 2026: Only connected V-16 lights will be legally accepted.

How to Choose a Compliant V-16 Light

When purchasing a V-16 light, ensure it:

  • Is approved by the DGT (look for certifications like LCOE or IDIADA).

  • Features 360-degree visibility and operates for at least 30 minutes.

  • Has integrated geolocation capabilities to connect with DGT 3.0.

  • Operates autonomously without external power sources.

Popular brands include Help Flash IoT, PF Led One, and Goodyear V16.

Implications for Expats and Tourists

If you’re an expat or planning to drive in Spain:

  • Ensure your vehicle is equipped with a DGT-approved V-16 light by 2026.

  • Be aware that non-compliance can result in fines ranging from €80 to €200.

  • Tourists driving in Spain are also subject to this regulation.
